Officials will lower Lincoln County’s Cedar Creek Lake 5 to 7 feet in an effort to improve fishing. The lake’s drawdown is scheduled to begin today. The drawdown will increase predation on bluegill by the bass and that should result in improvements to bluegill and bass fishing in the future, said Gerry Buynak, assistant director of fisheries for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. The small sunfish hide in the rooted aquatic vegetation along the shore and the bass can’t get at them. The drawdown will put the bass and the small bluegill in close association with one another.

.

Not only will the drawdown help bass reduce the numbers of stunted bluegill - allowing the remaining panfish to grow larger - but it will also help anglers.

.

Lowering the water level should reduce the amount of aquatic plants along the shoreline of Cedar Creek Lake that make bank fishing difficult, said John Williams, southeastern fishery district biologist for Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. Once these plants die, the nutrients tied up in them will be released back into the water when lake levels return to normal next March.

.

Boat ramps will remain usable after the drawdown. However, there will be a rotten egg smell at the dam from the release of hydrogen sulfide off the lake bottom. The hydrogen sulfide quickly dissipates once it contacts air and should not cause any harm other than the smell, Williams said.

.

The Kentucky Division of Water will monitor water released from the lake to ensure water quality is maintained in Cedar Creek and further downstream in the Dix River.
